Open-source design and prototyping tool. The free plan has unlimited files and up to 8 editors.
The Figma alternative people pick when they want the source code too. Penpot is an open source, browser-based design and prototyping tool that works with SVG and is often named as a Figma alternative. The pricing page lists a free plan with unlimited projects, unlimited files, up to 8 editors, unlimited storage and 7 days of version history. Unlimited costs $7 a month ($84 a year) for unlimited editors, 10GB of storage and 30 days of history. Enterprise costs $25 a month ($300 a year) for 25GB and 90 days. Private Server costs $50,000 a year for custom infrastructure, 10TB of storage and a self-hosting option. G2 shows 10 reviews that praise an intuitive interface and the open source approach, while noting missing automatic arrangement and lag in Firefox. A r/web_design user says Figma feels smoother on large files. It suits teams that want an open source design tool and can accept a smaller ecosystem.

The free plan is generous on files and storage and limits you to 8 editors and 7 days of version history. Unlimited at $7 a month removes the editor cap. The pricing extract I read shows a self-hosting option only on the Private Server plan at $50,000 a year, and marks the other plans as having no self-hosting option. Penpot is described on Reddit and G2 as open source, but I did not confirm on the page if you can self-host the open source code for free, so check the Penpot documentation before you plan on it. G2 has only 10 reviews, so most comparison evidence comes from Reddit. Users report smoother performance in Figma on large files and a larger plugin ecosystem there.
