Pulling your files back out never adds an egress charge. Cloudflare R2 is object storage with no charge for egress bandwidth on any storage class. Standard storage costs $0.015 per GB-month, with Class A operations (writes and lists) at $4.50 per million and Class B operations (reads) at $0.36 per million. Infrequent Access storage costs $0.01 per GB-month, with higher operation prices, a $0.01 per GB retrieval fee and a 30-day minimum storage duration. The free tier each month is 10 GB of storage, 1 million Class A operations and 10 million Class B operations. The migration tools Super Slurper and Sippy are free, and you pay only for the operations they make. Reddit users like the free egress and warn that read operations still cost money at scale.

πŸ‘ Good boy

  • +The pricing page says there are no charges for egress bandwidth on any storage class.
  • +The monthly free tier is 10 GB-month of storage, 1 million Class A operations and 10 million Class B operations.
  • +Standard storage is $0.015 per GB-month. The page's example of 1,000 GB stored with 1 million reads comes to $14.85 a month.
  • +Deleting objects and buckets and aborting multipart uploads are free, and requests that fail with 401 Unauthorized are not charged.
  • +Super Slurper and Sippy migration tools are free to use. You pay only for the operations they make on your R2 bucket.
  • +A Reddit commenter wrote that R2 is still incredibly cost-effective, especially with the free egress.
  • +Another Reddit commenter said bucket data lives on the Cloudflare network and loads extremely fast unlike S3.

πŸ‘Ž Watch out

  • βˆ’Operations still cost money. The page's asset-hosting example, 100,000 files of 100 KB read 10 million times a day, costs $104.40 a month, all from Class B reads.
  • βˆ’A Reddit post titled 'R2 Pricing: Serving Files/Images is Not Free' warns to factor in Class B operations even though egress is free.
  • βˆ’Infrequent Access adds a $0.01 per GB retrieval fee, higher operation prices and a 30-day minimum storage duration, so you are billed for 30 days even if you delete sooner.
  • βˆ’Standard storage at $0.015 per GB-month is higher than Backblaze B2's $6.95 per TB, which works out to about $0.00695 per GB.
  • βˆ’The pricing table marks egress as Free with a footnote that I could not read in my capture, so read the footnote before you plan around unlimited egress.
  • βˆ’A commenter in the 2021 launch thread on Hacker News doubted that free egress could be sustainable. The page, last updated Oct 1, 2026, still lists it as free.
  • βˆ’I found no G2, Capterra or Trustpilot reviews for R2, so user evidence here is Reddit and Hacker News.

The catch

R2 removes the egress bill, not the request bill. Class B reads cost $0.36 per million on Standard, so a site that serves many small files pays for reads. The page's own example of 10 million reads a day for 30 days comes to $104.40 a month. Infrequent Access is cheaper per GB at $0.01, but you pay a $0.01 per GB retrieval fee, higher operation prices and a 30-day minimum, even if you delete earlier. Storage on Standard is $0.015 per GB-month. Backblaze B2 lists $6.95 per TB, about $0.00695 per GB, so B2 is cheaper per stored GB if you do not need R2's free egress. The pricing table has a footnote on free egress that I could not read, so check it on the page. Billing is described in Cloudflare's billing policy.
