NhostFree tier and limits

Postgres, GraphQL and auth on Hasura. The free Starter plan has a 1 GB database.

Pick it if you want GraphQL and Postgres without wiring the pieces yourself. Nhost is a backend platform built on PostgreSQL, GraphQL and Hasura, with authentication and file storage, and one of its team members said in a 2021 r/graphql thread that it is self-hostable. The pricing page lists a Starter plan at $0 with a 1 GB database, 1 GB of storage, 5 GB of egress, 1 project and 1 member, and the project is paused after one week of inactivity. Pro is $25 a month with a 10 GB database, 50 GB of storage and automated backups. Team is $599 a month and adds point-in-time recovery, SOC 2 Type II and an email support SLA. I found no G2, Capterra or Trustpilot reviews for Nhost, and the Reddit threads I could read are several years old, so this entry rests mostly on the pricing page.

πŸ‘ Good boy

  • +The pricing page lists a Starter plan at $0 with a 1 GB database, 1 GB of storage and 5 GB of egress.
  • +Pro at $25 a month lists a 10 GB database, 50 GB of storage, 50 GB of egress, automated backups and unlimited members.
  • +Team at $599 a month adds point-in-time recovery, SOC 2 Type II, an email support SLA, a dedicated Discord channel and connection to external databases.
  • +A r/reactjs poster described Nhost as a serverless backend built on PostgreSQL, GraphQL and Hasura, which suits teams that already want a Postgres-first stack.
  • +A member of the Nhost team said in r/graphql that it is self-hostable and that many people host the same stack with Hasura Backend Plus.
  • +A r/graphql commenter who runs Hasura in production said its biggest benefit is a big speed increase for complex queries. That comment is about Hasura, which Nhost builds on.

πŸ‘Ž Watch out

  • βˆ’The Starter project is paused after one week of inactivity, so a side project you stop touching needs to be woken up.
  • βˆ’Starter allows 1 project and 1 member, so a second person cannot join without paying for Pro.
  • βˆ’The jump from Pro at $25 to Team at $599 is the point where point-in-time recovery and SOC 2 Type II appear on the plan list.
  • βˆ’The same Nhost team member said in 2021 that they had not yet written proper documentation for self-hosting. I cannot tell whether that has changed.
  • βˆ’The Hasura commenter named lack of flexibility as its biggest downside, but the sentence was cut off in my excerpt, so I do not know what else they listed.
  • βˆ’I found no G2, Capterra or Trustpilot text for Nhost, and the Reddit threads are old, so there is little recent user feedback to judge it by.

The catch

The Starter plan pauses the project after one week of inactivity. The pricing page extract lists Pro and Team with the same quotas (10 GB database, 50 GB storage, 50 GB egress, 1 project), and the Team plan adds point-in-time recovery, SOC 2 Type II, an email support SLA, a dedicated Discord channel and connection to external databases. I did not re-read the page as plain text, so the per-plan quotas may be a merged list. Check the live page before you pick a plan. I found no review-site text for Nhost. The Reddit threads I could read are from several years ago, including a 2021 comment from an Nhost team member about self-hosting, so treat the self-hosting and open-source tags as a lead to confirm in the docs, not as a current guarantee. Commercial use and card requirements are marked unknown because the pages I read do not say.
