Payments & Billing
Payments API for developers. Card payments cost 2.9% + 30¢ per successful transaction.
You pay per sale, so the fee shows up when the revenue does. Stripe is a payments platform with APIs for accepting cards, running subscriptions, calculating tax and screening for fraud. The pricing page lists 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card transaction, plus 0.5% for manually entered cards, 1.5% for international cards and 1% for currency conversion. A dispute costs $15, Billing starts at $620 a month on a one-year contract, Tax at $90 a month and Radar at $10 a month. G2 lists high fees as the most mentioned drawback with 20 mentions, followed by poor customer support with 10 and funds holding with 6. A r/webdev commenter says Stripe's main advantage is ease of use as a developer but that it occasionally locks accounts. Capterra shows 4.6 from 3,384 reviews. It suits developers who want control of the checkout flow and will handle tax themselves or pay for Stripe Tax.

Stripe has no free usage allowance. You pay a fee on each successful card transaction, so no payments means no fee. In the extract I read, monthly fees appear only on the add-ons: Billing from $620 a month, Tax from $90 a month and Radar from $10 a month. Fees stack. An international card paid in a different currency costs 2.9% + 30¢ plus 1.5% plus 1%. Disputes cost $15 each, and the Smart Disputes fee is 30% of the disputed amount on disputes won. The most repeated complaints on G2 and Capterra are fees, slow support on disputes and held funds. A r/webdev commenter described random account locks. These are user reports and I did not verify them.
